How to create and manage skills in Penny

Create reusable custom skills that guide Penny through specific tasks, and manage them from the Manage skills panel.

Written by Sarah Fogtmand

Penny skills are your way to personalize Penny and teach it how you work. When you add a skill, you show Penny your objectives, how you approach a task, and the outcome you expect, so it can improve your chats, especially for tasks and chats you repeat often.

Skills are private to you. Only you can see, use, and manage the skills you create. Other users on your account have their own separate set of skills.

Creating a skill

  1. Open a new chat with Penny.

  2. Click the + icon next to the Ask me… field.

  3. Select + Add skill.

  4. Enter a Skill name. This becomes the command you type to run the skill, so keep it short and specific, for example: weekly-status-report.

Note: Each skill name must be unique. You cannot give two skills the same name.

  5. Enter a Description. Keep it short and focus on what the skill does, not how it does it.

  6. Enter Instructions. Write the steps, rules, and examples Penny should follow when it runs the skill.

Tip: At the end of a chat that went well, ask Penny to turn the conversation into a skill prompt. Use its answer as a starting point for the Instructions field.

Note: When Penny is deciding which skill to load, it only sees the skill name and description. The instructions are only shown to Penny once the skill is loaded.

  7. Click Save.

Your new skill appears in the Manage skills panel. Type / in the chat to see your skills in a dropdown, then select the one you want to run.

Penny can also recognize when a skill applies and run it without you typing a command. For example, if you have a skill built around weekly top-seller reports, asking "show me the top sellers this week" can trigger it directly.

Tip: A skill is not tied to one feed. To run a skill against a different feed, switch the feed in the chat before you use the skill.

Managing your skills

Once you have created a skill, the Manage skills option shows up in the drop-down.

  1. Open a chat with Penny.

  2. Click the + icon next to the Ask me… field.

  3. Select Manage skills.

The panel lists every skill you have created, along with its description and the date it was last updated.

Note: The Manage skills panel only shows skills you created. You won't see skills other users on your account have created.

From this panel, you can:

  • Turn a skill on or off. Use the toggle next to the skill name. Turning a skill off prevents it from running without deleting it.

  • Edit a skill. Click the three dots next to the skill and select Edit to update its name, description, or instructions.

  • Delete a skill. Click the three dots next to the skill and select Delete to remove it.

  • Create a new skill. Click + Create new at the bottom of the panel.
